Abai Village & gaetbae approach

아바이마을

Explore a neighbourhood shaped by Korean War displacement, with local food and a short gaetbae ferry crossing nearby.

The village grew from a community of Korean War refugees, particularly from Hamgyeong-do. Its food and streets offer a way to understand how memories of home became part of Sokcho.

What the village name and food tell you

The official visitor guide explains “abai” as a friendly word for an older man in Hamgyeong-do dialect. That small language detail helps connect the place to the community’s origins rather than treating the name as a restaurant brand.

Look for the relationship between neighbourhood history and the food on the menus: the tourism guide describes Hamheung-style cold noodles, stuffed squid and sausage soup in the restaurant area. Choose one dish to understand in context instead of rushing through several unfamiliar names.

Read the neighbourhood before choosing a restaurant

Abai Village is worth approaching as a neighbourhood with a history, rather than only as a food stop. The Korean War refugee community described in the official visitor guide gives context to the food and the sense of remembered home.

Give yourself a few minutes to look around before joining a restaurant queue. Keep a respectful distance from residential doorways and ask before photographing people. A quiet street is not necessarily a tourist display.

Plan the gaetbae crossing correctly

Treat the gaetbae as an optional transport experience within the outing. Confirm the landing on the bank where you are standing, its operation and the payment arrangement. The village address and the market-side ferry approach are different map destinations.

If your map route includes the water crossing, check that it is practical for your group, luggage and time. Keep a land-route alternative for a service interruption or a decision not to use the ferry. Do not assume the last crossing will match your dinner plans.

A useful order for a first visit

  1. Choose your starting bank: arrive from the market side or go directly to the village address, depending on your previous stop.
  2. Take a short neighbourhood walk before settling on a meal. Notice which spaces are businesses and which are private homes.
  3. Compare the dishes and portion sizes on two or three menus rather than ordering immediately at the first queue.
  4. Finish by confirming the way back to your next stop. Save the Korean address while your connection is working.

What to ask before ordering

For ojingeo sundae or Abai sundae, ask what ingredients are in the restaurant’s version and whether a small portion is available. These dish names should not be used as a shortcut for dietary suitability.

Show “어떤 재료가 들어가나요?” for “What ingredients are in it?” and “작은 사이즈도 있나요?” for “Is a smaller size available?” Use a precise ingredient name when discussing a restriction. If the answer is unclear, choose another dish.

Village visit questions

Should I visit before or after the market? Either can work. Put your main meal at one location and leave the other as a walk or snack stop, so you do not turn the outing into two large meals.

Is a ferry ride required to visit the village? Plan the approach in your map service. Do not assume every route to the village uses the same crossing.

A suggested visit

Allow 60–90 minutes for a short visit; add time for food and any ferry queue.
