The cultural story

UNESCO describes Jikji as the oldest surviving book printed with movable metal type. The key word is surviving: this is a statement about an extant book, not a claim that no earlier printing activity existed.

Plan your first experience

Before a museum outing, read a short explanation of movable type and compare it with woodblock printing. A page-sized block carries a different working process from separate pieces of type. Our Tripitaka Koreana guide provides a useful comparison.

What visitors should check

Confirm current exhibitions and venue access with the local operator before travelling. Do not assume the surviving original volume is displayed in Cheongju. Ask whether objects are originals, replicas or demonstrations. An educational printing activity may explain the technique without providing access to the historic book itself.
